A Note on Environmentalism and Environmental Justice: Environmental Justice concerns are quite different than the general umbrella of Environmentalism under which they are sometimes grouped. Environmentalism pertains to advocacy for protection of the natural environment. Environmental Justice (EJ) involves issues of oppression stemming from the unequal distribution of hazardous living and working conditions to poor people and communities of color. According to the 17 principles of Environmental Justice established by the First National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit in 1991, environmental injustices are “a violation of international law, the Universal Declaration On Human Rights, and the United Nations Convention on Genocide.”
